Roots & lineage

A Workshop inspired by Bali and Indonesia Natural Dyes traditions

Our workshop welcomes those who feel curious or deeply called to plant dyes.

Seeing that the vast Indonesian archipelago carries centuries of dye knowledge: from village traditions in Sumba to forest cultures in Kalimantan, where communities have long worked plant dyes in relationship with the land and the spiritual life of communities. Bali, Indonesia, certainly offers a powerful place to begin.

The setting

Our Natural Dye Workshop’s private location in Bali.

We hold our natural-dye lingerie workshops in private, natural locations across Bali; including: riversides, gardens, and mountain spaces.

Each workshop takes place in a different setting and season so as to accommodate Bali's climate, which makes certain plants available and gives every gathering the land's unique energy.

The space

Our natural dye workshop is more than a technical lesson.
It is a feminine, sensory experience.

Our team prepares the space with flowers, candles, textiles, and natural elements, creating an atmosphere of softness and beauty.

Participants of the Natural Dye Workshop in Bali are calmly preparing natural pigments and testing colors during a session. They are working with natural dyes extracted from leaves and flowers.

The natural dye workshop

Karunia holds these events quarterly,
offering an introduction to natural dyeing.

During this workshop, you will dye cotton embroidered bras and underwear alongside a small group of women.

These intimate pieces become your canvas for the day: an invitation to reconnect with your feminine nature, your playfulness, and the simple joy of making colour with your hands.

The primary dye plants for the workshop are secang and marigold. Depending on the seasonal availability in Bali, other plant dyes may also be introduced, guided by what the land offers at the time: whether leaves, bark, roots, flowers, or berries.

Time & flow

The workshop runs for approximately 4 to 5 hours, including a shared lunch in between.

Arrive at 10:00am at the location in Bali; the workshop concludes around 3:00pm.

The day unfolds spontaneously, allowing space for learning, testing, and rest.

What’s included

You will leave the workshop with your own naturally dyed lingerie pieces — each one unique — and a deeper understanding of plant dyes and sustainable fashion.

The natural dye workshop covers:

  • Cultivating love, inspiration, and also reverence for the natural world through co-creation with plants;
  • Exploring core natural dye approaches — including immersion dyeing (dye baths) and eco-printing through steaming with plants;
  • An introduction to the basic chemistry of plant dyeing, including fixers, mordants, and colour shifters, and how to apply them to natural fibres;
  • Using food waste and everyday plants as an accessible way to integrate natural dyes into daily life;
  • Learning how to wash, care for, and also preserve natural fibres and plant-dyed garments;
  • Creating space for beauty, playfulness, and sisterhood — offering women a soft, supportive environment to drop into the feminine and make garments together.
