How to care for silk garments

and Other naturally-dyed organic fabrics

Knowing how to care for silk garments properly is essential to preserve their softness, color, and longevity. Silk is a delicate natural fiber that responds best to gentle washing, mindful handling, and careful storage.

Because our pieces are crafted using natural fabrics and plant-based dyes, correct laundering plays a key role in maintaining their original texture and depth of color over time.

At RIMMBA, we work exclusively with natural materials and traditional dyeing techniques, which means caring for your silk garments thoughtfully is not only recommended — it is essential.

Detailed Silk Washing Instructions

✘ Do not machine-wash silk!

✔ Handwash only — Do not dry clean.

  1. Wash garments in a separate vessel with cold water.
  2. Dilute mild soap or bar soap in the water before adding your garment.
  3. Gently wash by hand, swishing the garment for several minutes.
  4. Rinse in cold water until all soap runs clean.
  5. Dry in the shade on a hanger.

* Place a towel under the silk garment to catch water drips.

* Silk dries very quickly. Leave overnight and it will be ready to wear in the morning.

Food & Oil Stains

How to wash yuor silk garments if you spill food or pasta oil on it:

  1. When you get home, gently dab the stain with a generous amount of baby powder (or corn-starch) to absorb the oil.

  2. Leave it overnight — or at least a minimum of 4 hours — to allow the powder to draw out the oil.

  3. The next day, gently brush off the powder.

  4. Wash the entire garment in cold water with mild soap.

    • Do not spot clean, as this may cause uneven color patches.

    • Always submerge the whole garment to maintain even tones.

  5. Rinse thoroughly in cold water until the soap runs clean, and dry in the shade.

  6. If the oil stain remains, repeat the process with fresh baby powder to continue drawing out the oil before washing again.

General Stain and Care for Silk:

Do not spot clean, as it may cause uneven color. For small stains, completely submerge the garment in cold water. Dilute a small amount of detergent or bar soap, and gently rub the stained area with your fingers or palm. Always dry in the shade, never in direct sunlight.

Storage & Travel Care:

Caring for the longevity of your silk garment’s natural colors, we recommend storing it in the cotton pouch to protect it from sunlight and humidity. You may also hang your garment in your closet, as long as it is kept away from direct sunlight. When travelling, always use the pouch to prevent snagging, stains, and sun exposure.

Healing Properties of Plant Dyes

Natural dyes carry healing qualities:

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Anti-microbial

  • Anti-bacterial

  • UV protection

They aid in inspiration, imagination, focus, and clarity of intuition. “RIMMBA aims to connect with the mystical spirit of the jungle, encouraging a deeper appreciation for nature and fostering a conscious and caring relationship with the world around us. We hope those who wear RIMMBA garments feel the energy of the people who crafted them and the healing abilities of the plants.”

Why We Choose Only Natural Fabrics

At RIMMBA, we stand firm in our commitment to use 100% natural fabrics — silk, cotton, linen, and ramie — in every garment we create. In today’s world, more than 70% of textiles are made from synthetics, a number that continues to grow as fast fashion dominates the industry. These petroleum-based fabrics may be cheap to produce, but they come at a hidden cost: to our planet, and to our health.

We believe that what touches your skin matters. Our skin is the largest organ of the body, and it absorbs the energy and chemistry of the materials we wear every day. Natural fabrics breathe, protect, and age beautifully, while synthetics can trap toxins and contribute to the global waste crisis.

Though natural fibers are more expensive to source and work with, we choose them because our health, our Earth, and our heritage matter more than cutting costs. Every RIMMBA piece is created with intention — softer on your skin, kinder to the planet, and aligned with the timeless craft of natural dyeing in Indonesia.

Who Made Your Clothes?

Our lovely tailors sewed your garment at our RIMMBA Atelier by the ocean in East Bali, and each piece is hand-dyed by a collective of natural dye artisans.
