A sneak peek at our 2020 collection
March 16 2020
Feather-light dresses. Sleek swimwear. Brand new colours. Are you ready to meet our 2020 collection? Very soon we’ll be launching our second ever season, with dozens of new designs in natural and recycled fabrics. To share more of the story behind the looks, here’s a little interview with RIMMBA founder and designer, Karunia Fischer.
What was the inspiration behind this collection?
My inspiration for RIMMBA really comes from what I would love to wear. This collection shows you what I find interesting and whatever is fitting to my style at the moment. I am also always inspired by my fabrics. A lot of the time I will pick out my fabrics first, work on my color choices, and then start designing. For example, silk tends to make me want to design elegant cocktail dresses and linen leads to casual Kaftans and oversized pants.
How many collections can we expect in 2020?
Just 1! It’s important to me that we advocate for slow fashion, and focus on quality, not quantity. So we’re only producing designs for one ‘season’ this year.
However, unlike our first collection, we won’t be releasing everything at once. I aim to launch our main collection in March, and then the natural dye collection in June 2020. I decided to separate the two simply because I want more time to experiment with new colours for the natural dye collection. I have to be very careful in selecting my colours and fabrics, so that I minimize any waste during the sampling phase. To do all this — to create a beautiful and low-impact natural dye collection — I like to set aside an entire month to work with my plants and spend time outside foraging. I don’t want to be distracted by anything else.
Which new pieces are you most excited about?
We have a new sporty swim design! The seams are piped with a contrasting colour to give it an extra pop. The set is inspired by a suit Maud Adams once wore in the 60s, which has high waisted bottoms and a fuller coverage. The minute you wear this set, you feel like you want to grab a tennis racket or sprint across a field. It’s empowering and flattering at the same time.
I am also very excited about our silk chiffon top and dress. I think these pieces will make every woman feel sexy and classy. I hadn’t worked with silk chiffon before, so it’s been a fun and challenging road getting here (with lots of sewing mistakes along the way).
One last thing I want to highlight is our new Kaftan design. It is my very first piece using Ramie fabric. Ramie is a natural fiber which belongs to the nettle family, native to eastern Asia. It’s special because it has a lustre like silk, but an inherent stiffness like linen. It’s extremely absorbent and can be woven into a lightweight pattern that stays cool in humid climates.
How is this collection different from the last one?
This collection is more feminine. My last collection had lots of jumpsuits and oversized pants. This time I wanted to include more dresses, delicate details, and silk.
I have also only included 100% natural fabrics in this upcoming collection. Some of last year’s pieces were made with a linen blend, but I wanted to keep it completely natural from here on out.
Can you share a little something about the campaign photoshoots?
