Our favourite apps for ethical shopping
March 03 2020
Here’s some food for thought: across the globe, some 80 billion new pieces of clothing are bought every year. That’s a staggering number — and one that continues to rise, even as sustainable fashion brands grow in popularity. It’s clear that the single best thing we can do for the planet is to consume less, and to shop smarter. To help you make better, greener choices on-the-go, we’ve hand-picked some of the most exciting ethical shopping apps on the market.
Good On You
Want to know how sustainable your favourite brands really are? Try out Good On You. We love this slick, stylish app for its easy-to-understand ethical rating system, and its comprehensive list of brands. First launched in 2015, Good On You allows users to search through thousands of companies, seeing how they measure up against issues like worker’s rights, environmental impact and animal welfare. Pulling information from mission statements, investigations, and from reports by trusted bodies like Fair Trade and Greenpeace, each brand is given a review and a score out-of-five. You can even set your preferences by choosing which issues you care about the most. As a bonus, their blog and Instagram is pretty great, too.
DoneGood
If you’re looking for more direct assistance, check out this clever browser plug-in which suggests sustainable alternatives while you shop on Amazon, Google or other leading retail websites. It works by matching your search terms against its database of 200+ high quality, low impact brands, and instantly delivering recommendations for you to consider. DoneGood is still young, but it has already helped divert $920,000 worth of purchasing power towards smaller brands who are committed to fighting climate change.
Think Dirty
This one is a barcode scanner for all of you clean beauty advocates out there. With so much rampant greenwashing in the makeup and skincare industry, it’s hard to know which products are truly eco-friendly, and which chemicals are actually safe. Think Dirty is an app which helps you break down the ingredients in more than 1.4 million products. Just point, scan, and decide.
Fashion Footprint Calculator
Last but not least, we wanted to give a shout-out to the brilliant Fashion Footprint Calculator by thrifting giant thredUP. It’s not an app, but this user-friendly online quiz is a godsend for anyone trying to determine and reduce their carbon footprint. It’s also chock-full of valuable info that can help you understand the environmental impact of your favourite pair of jeans or your dry-cleaning habit. Did you know, for example, that shopping online has up to 60% lower carbon impact than shopping in-store? Yep, mind blown.
Curious? We hope you’ll give our little list of resources a go! Because online tools like these only get better when they are used by many. And as the community around them grows, so will the pressure on brands to step up their transparency and ethics. So tell us, what are some of your tried and tested conscious consumer apps? Share them with us on social media, and let’s keep this conversation alive.
